I'm planning a surf trip to northern South America and Panama/Nicaragua this summer (July and August) but have heard that there is going to be a moderate ENSO this year. What does this mean in terms of surf and conditions?

El Nino afficionado Nick Carroll takes time from watching his kids to reply:
"Generally with the warmer water associated with the moderate beginning of this El Nino phenomenon, you can expect more tropical activity along the entire coast of Central America this summer - especially throughout Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. This will result in slightly more rain and variable onshore winds. There should also be more tropical storm and hurricane development offshore resulting in more localized swell activity but usually not very clean. Hope this helps!"
