Are you expected to tip the boat captain and crew on boat surf trips? If so, what are the guidelines?
asked by Jim, Tustin CA

Henry Morales from Wavehunters Travel responds:
Upon the conclusion of a successful Mentawais boat trip it is proper and expected to tip the boatmen. It is actually customary to tip both the boatmen and the chef, which comprise "the crew".
An adequate tip for the crew would be approximately 5% of your total charter cost per person and a really good tip would be about 10% of your total charter cost per person.
Thus, if you booked a $1500 charter, an adequate tip would be $75 per person and a really good tip would be up around $100-$150 per person.
Important: you should collect these tips together as a group and give them collectively to the Captain of the boat who will distribute them fairly among his crew.
Try to avoid giving tips to individual crew members as you risk undermining the authority of the skipper. It is generally not customary to tip the Western skippers or owner/operators of the boat, just the "crew". You're going to stoke out the Indos big time with your generosity.
Other gifts like t-shirts and boardshorts are always appreciated as well.
