Life is filled with mysteries, secrets that have eluded the greatest minds for centuries. Some hold the keys to the meaning of life; others are trifling puzzles more ludicrous than enlightening. This column's for the latter. If you're struggling with an odd surfing question and have no clue whom to ask, you're worries are over. Whether you wonder if Kelly got a weave or why there are no waves on Gilligan's Island, we'll split hairs to skipper you the news, little buddy. Just remember: the "querier" the better.

Hi, I am a premium subscriber travelling to Rio, Brazil in April and would like to know what the wave heights are generally during that month.
Can anyone there enlighten me so I take appropriate equipment? Is April generally a good month to travel there to surf?

Assuming that one cannot move to Hawaii or California, but has the entire East Coast to surf, live, and work -- where would be the best place in terms of waves and lifestyle? The weather isn't that important as the overall environment. What's your choice?

So I read the question and answer to the email about the best place for a surfer to live in California (here) and my mind started thinking...where would be the best place in the world for a surfer to live based solely on the consistency of swells and the quality of waves? (Pretty much, what place gets the most and best surf?)

I was wondering where to find a good selection of maps that are SUPER detailed showing all the islands in the South Pacific, etc.
Because I'm moving out there soon and am going to do just a surfer-bum make-money-on-the-side deal and mosey around trying to find waves and reefs. Anything would help heaps.
Now considering I'm kinda afraid of urchins and sharks, are there reefs in the world that don't have big sharks, but aren't 3/2 wetsuit land?
Thanks man.

Are you expected to tip the boat captain and crew on boat surf trips? If so, what are the guidelines?

The forecasters at Surfline spend every day studying storm tracks, wave models, coastline bathymetry, swell windows, etc. There is probably noone on the planet that knows more about how waves impact the California coastline. So, if you were to live in one area (or county) of California, based solely on the availabily of consistent high-quality surf, where would it be?

I was just wondering why there's not enough surfing knowledge or world-wide hype (competitions) in Tofino on Vancouver Island, Canada. Surf Spots here on the West Coast like Cox Bay and Long Beach are the source of all the waves for places like Pipeline and Sunset in Hawaii.
And since it's here that the waves first strike and generate, you get perfect and crisp breaks for days on end, with complete consistency. Why isn't it a venue for a WCT competition? It boasts some of the best surf in the world in the nicest place on earth (Vancouver). So why no hype?
Thanks for your time.

Alright, it's July and I want to know why it's plenty warm enough to trunk it here in San Diego but this past weekend while surfing in Baja near K38 I had to wear a fullsuit and booties. Why is there such a drastic change in temperature over less that 50 or so miles, and why is it colder South?

I'm planning a surf trip to northern South America and Panama/Nicaragua this summer (July and August) but have heard that there is going to be a moderate ENSO this year. What does this mean in terms of surf and conditions?

I'm gonna be in Romania this summer for a while playing some tournaments (don't ask what sport). They have the Black Sea there and I was wondering if that coast ever gets any decent, ridable waves? Wave models are showing 3 to 6 feet right now, but you can't trust them. Know anything about surfing that place?

I need to find out how to ship my longboard out to Hawaii. Can I ship it out UPS or is there a better way? I can't bring it with me on the plane because I need to surprise my fiancee with were we are going!
Thank You

I'm planning to study abroad in Australia next year and was wondering which universities were closest to some good surf spots. I want to surf as much as I can but don't want to get stuck at a college that's far from the beach or swell. Got any tips?
