Surfrider takes trash from beaches and puts on billboards

Surfrider Foundation is showcased on two billboards that were donated through Viacom by organizing two beach clean ups to draw attention to our beaches and coastal environment by exhibiting actual California beach trash on billboards in an unprecedented multi-dimensional display.

World-class advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, Los Angeles, CA, helped turn the trash into garbage advertising by showcasing the actual garbage that was collected on the beach on the billboard in a 3-D effect with the intent to alarm people by displaying just how much trash can be collected in one day.

"Litter from anywhere in the city can end up on the beaches, in the waterways and beyond after traveling through the storm water system. We all have a role to play in keeping our beaches clean", said Felipe Bascope, longtime Surfrider Foundation supporter and Associate Creative Director/Copywriter on the pro-bono project at Saatchi & Saatchi, LA. "These two billboards are intended to serve as a wake up call as to the amount of waste that can be found on a single day, while exhibiting Surfrider’s commitment to protecting our beaches."

Based on high-profile outdoor board availability, the two coastal locations chosen for clean ups were Long Beach, CA and Redondo Beach, CA. The Long Beach board posted on September 12th, 2005 at 2nd Street and Glendora in Belmont Shores. The trash that is represented on the board was collected by the Long Beach Surfrider Foundation Chapter during a beach clean-up on August 20th, 2005.

The Redondo Beach board went up on September 19, 2005, on Pacific Coast Highway and Ave. G in Redondo Beach. This beach clean up took place on August 21, 2005, as a joint effort on behalf of Surfrider Foundation’s local chapter and Saatchi & Saatchi LA volunteers who helped clean the beach since it's the agency’s local beach.

Amongst the waste found were refrigerator doors, fast-food trays, ladders, 50-gallon drums, buoys, broken beach chairs and umbrellas, bike racks plus such common trash as cans, plastic bottles and bags. The billboard was designed and built by outdoor specialists Scenario Design who mounted the trash on the board that will have a month shelf life. The understated yet impactful copy reads: Found on Long Beach, August 20, 2005.
